World War I Memorial Tablet | Located in front of Austin High, this stone memorial honors 18 fallen Austin High students who died in World War I.
In 1920, the students of Austin High wished to honor their war dead, and the PTA provided funds for the memorial tablet. It was first unveiled at the "Old Red" campus, at 9th & Trinity, where it stood for 37 years. In 1957 it was relocated to the Rio Grande campus. Austin High had already been at Rio Grande since 1925, but it was after a fire destroyed Old Red in 1956 that the stone was moved. When the Lakeside campus was built and opened in 1975, Austin High had yet another home. The stone was brought over and rededicated in 1978. In 2001, the PTA began a campus beautification project that included the placement of alumni bricks in the walkway around the stone. The bricks typically include names and graduation years of alumni who have made donations toward the improvement of Austin High.
